Elle Belga +
Num9 DJ Set
Soul Stereo, Athens
October 24th, 22:00
h
After exploring rockʼs
margins with bands such as Manta Ray or Viva Las Vegas, guitarist and composer
Josele García turns his music towards a classic pop aesthetic on Elle
Belga, a new project shared with Fany Álvarez (vocals, keyboards),
stretching time and genre boundaries, with vocal melodies as each songʼs main
focus and a taste for tradition and chanson. Elle Belga will be playing in
Athens for the first time at
Soul Stereo.
And Num9 will be
hosting a DJ session right afTer Elle Belga's show. The second album by Num9
means the return of Coque Yturriaga (ex Migala, Emak Bakia) to the forefront of
electronic left-field pop laced with warm found sound, glowing textures,
rewarding details and challenging arrangements. “El Baile” (“The Dance”) is
dance music for people scared of the dance floor. "El Baile" is the constant
sensation of being about to reach the end of a party in which the music of
Matmos, AR Kane, or Four Tet has filled the gaps between indie torch
songs.
In his DJ Sets he mixes his own music with other music like
electronic, indie, hip hop and experimental sounds
ELLE BELGA
“Whatever we turn out with, we must be able to whistle it”. On his own words, Josele García describes how he and his girlfriend Fany Álvarez faced the making of 1971, their debut album as Elle Belga. Josele used to be a part of Manta Ray and Viva las Vegas, both celebrated acts from the Spanish experimental rock scene, but lately he has discovered the importance of human voice as an element of expression. He began preparing brief outlines of chants based on traditional Spanish lullabies and then covering those sketches with a lush instrumentation that included guitar and piano as guidelines, occasional brass arrangements and sampled rhythm parts used as a very own replica of the drum production that was featured on records released more than thirty years ago. An imaginative take on pop that helps rediscovering the vibe of European all time classics (think of Paco Ibáñez, Dominique A or Scott Walker) and still innovate within sound textures, ambience and tunes, filling each musical meter with a surprise, turn after turn, verse after verse, track after track.

Num 9
Num9
are strange and intoxicating, theyʼre introspective, slightly dark, rather
mysterious and delightfully impossible to describe. Think New Order or maybe
even Pet Shop Boys for the avant post-rock audience. Layers of analogue sounding
synths, swollen contentment, sweet fluctuations, stark interludes, spoken word
passages, beauty that pushes buttons, warm delight, ambitious,
delightful.
"El Baile" is about love and the confusion caused when sexual
desire makes sex seem better than it actually is and better than it will ever
be. Following this thread Coque Yturriaga, David Unison and Jordi Sancho risk
and dare to employ various weapons: Samples of favorite movies, hypnotic
arrangements and a myriad of rhythms ranging from catchy to warm, always
offering a sense of false climax and anticlimax. The title song features a vocal
collaboration with American singer/songwriter Dawn Landes over music inspired by
80ʼs Chicago House.
